I have kept chickens for the last eight years. I get them as chicks. I winter them over. The Chicken Chronicles will explain how I do it. I may sound kind of harsh at times, but I have not gone a day without at least 8 chickens since I started.
They are not pets. They are chickens. They are dumb and the poop on everything.
If I get a mean one...I eat it.
If it stops laying eggs...I eat it.
If it dies because it cannot handle our weather conditions...it was not meant to be in my flock.
If you want something to cuddle with...get a kitten.
